The children at URCC

Around 40 children, between three and twenty-two years of age, are living at URCC – most of them belong to a middle group aged around twelve to fourteen.

- There are almost as many boys as there are girls at the centre. Most of the children attend the local secondary school, Leganga Primary School, which is situated around 1 km from the centre at the main road. Seven of the older children, Zaituni, Lucas, Babuu (Tumuombee), Nelson, Chiku, Eva and Warda, attend secondary school, which is similar to the Danish high school (gymnasium). Prosper is the oldest and started university in Dar Es Salaam in September 2008, why he’s only back at the centre during vacations.

- Fundamentally, it’s the aim of the organization to be responsible for the children from they arrive at the centre until they have a job after having fulfilled an education and are ready to support themselves. This means, that the centre covers all their fundamental needs from food and clothes to education, medical treatment, toys, etc.

- The organization is non-religious and our children have as well Muslim as Christian backgrounds. They decide themselves whether they want to go to church or to the mosque and a couple of Christian children attend Sunday school regularly. In reality, it’s impossible to keep religion out of the picture in a country as religious as Tanzania, and life at the centre has, as a consequence, what you could call a Tanzanian-Lutheran touch. The only concrete and practical example of this is the children’s daily grace.
